ABSTRACT A new architecture of sender-adaptive and receiver-driven layered multicasting for video over Internet is presented in this paper. This architecture optimizes the overall performance by making the sender collaborate with the receivers. The statistical characteristics of bandwidth and packet loss ratio of all the receivers, the network temporal variation of each receiver, and the rate-distortion relation of the video codec have been taken into account. Techniques of network resource allocation, scalable video coding, FEC and pseudo-ARQ are also integrated in this scheme. Moreover, we introduce a new mathematical framework named as Q-Space Model & Optimization to generalize the multicasting approach. Simulation results demonstrate effectiveness of our scheme.

Error control for receiver-driven layered multicast of audio and video

We consider the problem of error control for receiverdriven layered multicast of audio and video over the Internet. The sender injects into the network multiple source layers and multiple channel coding (parity) layers, some of which are delayed relative to the source. Each receiver subscribes to the number of source layers and the number of parity layers that optimizes the receiver’s quality f...

FEC and Pseudo-ARQ for Receiver-Driven Layered Multicast of Audio and Video

We consider the problem of joint source/channel coding of real-time sources, such as audio and video, for the purpose of multicasting over the Internet. The sender injects into the network multiple source layers and multiple channel (parity) layers, some of which are delayed relative to the source. Each receiver subscribes to the number of source layers and the number of channel layers that opt...

Bandwidth Allocation for Layered Multicasted Video

Some type of transmission rate control protocol is required in order to support multicast video applications over the Internet. Previously, researchers have proposed two basic families of control protocols. The first, sender based rate-adaptation, focuses on the sender. The sender uses a single channel to transmit the video signal to all receivers, and the sender adjusts the transmission rate o...

SRAMT-LE: A Hybrid Sender And Receiver-Based Adaptation Scheme For TCP Friendly Multicast Transmission Using Layered Encoding

In this paper we describe a hybrid sender and receiver-based adaptation scheme for multicast transmission of multimedia data using layered encoding, which we call SRAMT-LE (Sender-Receiver based Adaptation scheme for Multicast Transmission using Layered Encoding). The most prominent features of SRAMT-LE are its distributed (to sender and receivers) transmission rate estimation algorithm and its...

Low-Complexity Video Coding for Receiver-Driven Layered Multicast

In recent years the “Internet Multicast Backbone”, or MBone, has risen from a small, research curiosity to a large scale and widely used communications infrastructure. A driving force behind this growth was the development of multipoint audio, video, and shared whiteboard conferencing applications. Because these real-time media are transmitted at a uniform rate to all the receivers in the netwo...
